THE DESCENDANTS OF STEPHEN MASEY IN AND AROUND McMINNVILLE, WARREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE
This material was gathered from various sites in the early days of the world-wide web, before i realised that web pages could (and would) be taken down, and that citing them by URL would be important. Much of it derived from one particular database hosted by Rootsweb WorldConnect -- which seems to have been taken down in the year 2005. (If the person who originally had the MASEY material online at Rootsweb would be so kind as to contact me, i would be very grateful and would give him or her proper credit for the research i am using here.)
The genealogy at the Rootsweb site was supplemented with my own later reasearch, all of which is documented with URLs, plus extensive information from my husband's family records, especially the contributions of Lori MASEY Winchester and Mary Ann MASEY. concerning the section demarked between the lines titled "----ADOPTION----" which the MASEY Rootsweb genealogist had given in only rudimentary form, listing only the first three children of John MASEY and none of their descendants (my husband's relatives).

1850 census data on the MASEY families of Warren County was placed online by a helpful person ("Dr. White") at the lengthy http://eclectic.ss.uci.edu/~drwhite/cases/wctnruby.ged page -- and that page also contains much CRISP and WOODLEE family genealogy as well.
Additions regarding the WOODLEE family (into which Mirah / Myrah MAZEY / MASEY married) were gathered from the COPE family page at http://www2.fwi.com/~migen/cope/dschrt.htm which contains a lot of material of further interest to those researching the multiply-inter-married families of Warren County Tennesee during the 19th century. My husband, whose background i am researching, descends from a boy named Jonny (Johnny / John Lee) MASEY, who was living in the Masey family but was listed as an "orphan" on the census of 1900 ad listed as a "son" in 1910. One of my husband's aunts said she vaguely remembered being told that before he was adopted (in an informal and not state-sanctioned adoption) he may have had another surname, and it may have been Fowler. There is no evidence for this, and my research indicates it is unlikely, but in an attempt to be thorough, i have developed a page about the Fowlers called THE FOWLER SURNAME IN MCMINNVILLE, WARREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE, 1820 - 1920
I hope this page proves of interest to those in the MASEY, MAZEY, MAZY, and allied families who are engaged in genealogical research.
Due to persistant family tales of being part African American and part Cherokee, i have noted family slaves in blue type for future reference. There were definitely ex-slaves who retained the MAZY / MAZEY name in Warren County after Emancipation and one of them, Richard MAZY / MAZEY had children who changed their racial identity from "colored" in the 1870 census to "white" in the 1880 census, which would logically lead one to surmise that he was bi-racial and thus the child of his "master." Since only three MAZEY / MAZY slaves are noted in early tax rolls of Warren County, we may assume that Richard was the child of one of them.
Note also the implied Native American connection to Cherokee Chief Joseph VANN under the MASEY-RUSSELL marriages.

NOTE: If this is correct, Willis Norwood RUSSELL married Vienna Malonia MASEY,
the older sister of his first wife, Mary Angeline MASEY, after Mary's death at the
age of 41 in 1877. Vienna Malonia was about 45 years old at the time of this union,
and bore no children. Willis was a widower with 7 surviving children (of the 9 born
to him and Mary Angeline), the oldest of whom was 22 and the youngest of whom was
1 year old. For more information on Willis N. RUSSELL, see his listing under his
first wife, Mary Angeline. Vienna, who was 45 years old at the time of Mary's death,
seems to have had no previous marriage or children, and was 6 years older than Willis
at the time of their marriage. It can be presumed that the marriage was one of
convenience and she helped Willis raise the children of her late sister.

William Hardin Russell (may have been known as Hardin Russell) and his wife Sarah Solomon
"settled in Warren Co about 1828 and lived there until their deaths, sometime after 1870,
but before 1880. They lived in Safley Hollow and a number of their children are buried in
Armstrong Cemetery. Willis Norwood Russell was their oldest child, died in 1905 and is
buried in Armstrong Cemetery. However, I haven't any information as to where William Hardin
Russell or his wife are buried."
NOTE: Warren County Times: Friday, May 26, 1905 - Willis Russell,
an old Confederate veteran, died late this evening. The burial will
occur at Armstrong tomorrow at 4:00 o'clock". He was a member of the
16th Tenn Infantry. He was shot in the arm and left breast at Murfreesboro
and sent home by his commander. He was then captured by the Federals and
as unable to serve, he was parolled.

1910 federal census of Warren County, TN lists him as "adopted son" in the MASEY household, age 28.
The implication is that he was born to another branch of the MASEY family and was cared for by
H. L. (Henry Lee?) Randolph / Randle / L. R. / L. Randoph MAZY MAZEY MASEY Jr. and his wife
Margaret Ellen / Margaret Eller / Margarett / Margaret Elvirie / Vinnie Margaret MCBRIDE prior to
1900, then formally adopted prior to 1910.
note that there was another John MASEY of about the sane age: John Henry Morgan MASEY, born 1876,
son of Stephen MASEY; see above. In other words, both brothers had sons named Thomas MASEY and John MASEY.
To further complicate things, one of John's grand-daughters recalled being told that her grandfather
had been adopted by the Masey family but that his name may have previously been FOWLER or something similar.
Census records contradict this, however, listing him as "Jonny MASEY, orphan"
