THE FOWLER SURNAME IN MCMINNVILLE, WARREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE, 1820 - 1910

This web page presents my research to date on the FOWLER
families of Warren County, TN. This research is excruciatingly
incomplete. Any help would be appreciated.

Warning, it's LONG! It surely does contain errors. And, alas,
it certainly reaches no great AHA of resolution to the mystery.

I began this work because i am trying to unravel the mystery
of the raising of the supposed FOWLER boy by the MASEY family of
McMinnville, TN. The boy was raised as an orphan in the home
and eventually took the MASEY name as an adult after a formal
adoption. He also later named two of his daughters after his
foster / adoptive mother.

Family members have stated that they are of "Black Dutch
Cherokee lineage." This would not be uncommon for natives of
Warren County, Tennessee. Some family members have visibly
Native American facial features and skin colour, with perhaps
an admixture of African American. The family has long
self-identified as "white." The adoption may be a barrier to
understanding how a Cherokee family could become "white."

I married into this family and my interest is as a genetic
and cultural researcher.

#1: THE ADOPTION I have extensive genealogical records on the Masey family of Warren County TN, allied with the surnames GIBBS, NUNLEY, MCBRIDE, ALLISON, PEPPER, BROWN, CRISP, BOULDIN, WILCHER, McGEE, MADEWELL, GREEN, BRYANT, etc. Most of these surnames, with the exception of Masey itself, appear on the Starr roll of Cherokee surnames. However, the adopted child i am tracing is supposedly NOT genetically of the Masey family. Why he was taken in and adopted by the MASEY family (the MASEYs who adopted him had a son -- who died fairly young) and how or if he was genetically or maritally connected to the MASEYs -- in a time when most fostering of orphans was informal and based on family ties -- is not yet known to me. In any case, the boys is said in the family to be a FOWLER descendant -- and the FOWLER family is also one with Cherokee linkages -- and African linkages -- in Tennessee. ----------------------- Cherokee Surname List by Starr : FOWLER (3) 325, 327, 370, 431 Colored Marriages TN 1868-1888 : FOWLER 25, 41, 59 ----------------------- That collateral members of the MASEY family knew collateral members of the FOWLER family in Warren County can be demonstrated via marriage, but the marriage post-dates the adoption and may simply be a coincidence. All i have from that generation, though, is a picture of the woman John Lee FOWLER MASEY married, Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN. She was born 4 AUG 1884, in Bolton, Cowley Co. Kansas and i do not know how, when, or why she came to be in McMinnville, but on 14 JUN 1903 she married John Lee FOWLER, who had by that time changed his name to John Lee MASEY. Here is a beautiful studio portrait of her, which reproduction on the web does not do justice. It is undated, but she appears to be between 45 and 50 years old, and her hair is permed in a style of the 1930s, which gives us an estimated time-frame of 1929 - 1934. On the back of the picture is written Villa Adell McLaughlin Masey Linder (she married Mr. Linder in 1929). [Click here for the full-sized picture of Villa Adell McLaughlin Masey Linder, circa 1929 - 1934] The next pictures i have are all of the children of Lohn Lee FOWLER - MASEY and VIlla Adell MCLAUGHLIN. They certainly do not seem to favour their delicate, fine-boned fair-skinned, blue-eyed, and blonde-haired mother, but rather seem to be of darker skin tones, and for the most part have darker hair as well. This picture was taken in 1914 in McMinnville, Warren County, TN. It shows two of the children of the adopted John Lee FOWLER - MASEY and his wife Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN. On the back of the photo is written: Octa Elvira Masey age 10 yrs. Charles Leroy Masey age 8 yrs. [Click here for the full-sized picture of Octa Elvira Masey and Charles Leroy Masey, McMinnvile, Tennessee, 1914] This picture was taken in the 1920s, possibly in Oklahoma, Arizona, or California. It shows three of the children of the adopted John Lee FOWLER - MASEY and his wife Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN. On the font of the photo is written Leroy + Willie + Elsie On the back of the photo is written The Masey Clan [Click here for the full-sized picture of Willie Masey, Leroy Masey, and Elsie Masey, standing on a Navajo rug, circa 1927] The names are not in conventional left-to-right order, but it is likely that Willie V. MASEY is at left and Elsie Marguerite MASEY is at right. The man in the middle is Charles Leroy MASEY, by this time using the name Leroy rather than Charles. Note that the three MASEYs are standing outdoors in the sun on a Native American (Navajo) rug on the grass, with a black curtain behind them. The rug is woven with a complex pattern of squares, crosses, swastikas and feather-shapes. Villa Adell moved the family Arizona after the death of her husband John Lee MASEY, and that is where this picture may have been taken. This picture was taken in the 1930s, in California. It shows one of the children of the adopted John Lee FOWLER - MASEY and his wife Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN. On the back of the photo is written Leroy C. Masey [Click here for the full-sized picture of Leroy Masey, circa 1932 - 1939] Judging by his nice car, his white shirt, tie, and cable-knit sweater, and what appear to be Euclapytus trees in the background, this picture shows Leroy during the time he worked at the Belair Country Club, 10768 Belagio Rd, Bel Air, California. He worked there from MAR 1929 through 1941, when he took a job at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Santa Monica (where my step-father worked, coincidentally, a decade later).

#2: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1820s In trying to determine the parentage of the FOWLER child who was adopted by the MASEY family, i have researched all persons with the FOWLER surname living in Warren County, TN, from early settler days onward. Only one person with the FOWLER surname was found in Warren County during the 1820s, namely William FOWLER. He appears on two different records: Surname List from 1820 Census Of Warren County http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/gant-3.htm Fowler, William 1820 WARREN COUNTY, TN - CENSUS - 1820 Census http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/warren/census/1820/1820cens.txt Fowler, William 1824 WARREN COUNTY TENNESSEE ENTRY TAKERS INDEX ~ From 1824 http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/wet-defg.htm Applicant Entry No. Date Survey Book Page Acres Fowler, Wm. 1084 1826 1827 2 117 25 However, this post by Mabel G. Phillips -- mphillip@christiancounty.lib.mo.us -- indicates the presence of other FOWLERs in Warren County, TN in the 1820s. Name Lifespan Where Born Jacob B. FOWLER 1825-aft 1900 Warren County, TN Migration Steps to Cannon County, TN in 1836 to Caldwell County, KY in 1866 to Christian County, MO in aft 1876 Additional Notes Born in 1825 in the part of Warren County, TN which became in 1836 Cannon County, TN, Jacob B. Fowler married 21 May 1846 in Cannon County, TN Martha Virginia Elkins. He was missing from TN from 1849 to 1854 and may be the J. B. Fowler who lived part of that time in the part of Greene County, MO which became in 1859 Christian County, MO. In 1866, Jacob and Virginia had their seventh and final child. In December of that year, Jacob was granted a divorce in Caldwell County, KY and less than a week later married Susan Ford in the home of Lewis Claiborne Fowler. Lewis Claiborne Fowler had grown up in Warren County, TN and was the brother of a Jacob B. Fowler born in 1803 whom we believe but have not been able to prove is related to this Jacob B. Fowler. Jacob B. Fowler moved to Christian County, MO between the 1876 agricultural census and the 1880 federal census. He is last known from a lawsuit he filed in Christian County, MO in February 1900. He has never been found on any 1900 census. Researcher: Mabel G. Phillips I have found no further records concerning Jacob B. FOWLER in Warren Co., TN.

#3: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1830s A new FOWLER appears in Warren County in the 1830s. He may be related to William FOWLER (a son or brother) or not. No way to tell. 1830 Warren County, Tennesseee Census - http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/war1830.txt No FOWLER at all (William was missed or skipped...?) 1836 Warren Co. TN tax list, http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/gant-5.htm Fowler, William (no land, no slaves) Fowler, Benjamin A. (no land, no slaves) Two years later, these two FOWLERs have left, and a new FOWLER appears out of nowhere (nowhere known to me, that is). This is Perry A. FOWLER, and he will be around for quite a while and, with his wife Rebecca CARTER, will give rise to a large family of FOWLER progeny. 1838 Warren Co. #4: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1840s By 1840, both William and Benjamin FOWLER were no longer living in Warren County. I have not traced their whereabouts or fates. Jacob B. Fowler is also gone. However, Perry A. FOWLER remains, complete with wife and children. 1840 Surname List from 1840 Census Of Warren County By Wanda Muncey Gant http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/gant-7.htm Fowler, Perry 1840 United States Federal Census for Warren County Tennessee http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/1840.txt [Head of Household] [Male] [Female] [Other] Perry Fowler 010001 30001 (Males: 1 male aged 5-10, one male aged 30-40 (Females: 3 females under age 5, one female aged 30-40 (Other: none Abbreviations Used in "Other" Column: C = Commerce L = Learned profession M = Manufacturing RWV = Revolutionary War Veteran S = Slaves So in 1840 Perry A. Fowler was head of household aged 30-40 with a woman and four children living with him. If we assume that the woman is his wife and the children are their offspring, this is our first picture of him and his family: ----------------------- Perry A. FOWLER b: ABT 1814 + [-female-] b: ABT 1814 2 [-male-] b: ABT 1834 2 [-female-] b: ABT 1835 2 [-female-] b: ABT 1837 2 [-female-] b: ABT 1839 ----------------------- Since he had only been on the tax list in Warren County since 1838, it is safe to assume that he entered Warren County already married, with at least two of his then three children (he would eventually have a total of 10 natural children and one foster child). I have not yet located his birth records anywhere, but later census reports indicate he was born in Tennessee. DeKalb County is a likely spot to begin searching for his birth, as will become evident below. In later decades there were at least two men named Thomas FOWLER in Warren County. Due to the rearrangement of counties during the 19th century, i am also looking for FOWLER surnamed people in surrounding counties, and here is one: RIZEN FOWLER OF DEKALB COUNTY, 1840 FEDERAL CENSUS http://www.cafes.net/jlewis/1840CNS.htm Rizen Fowler 2300010000000 * 1000100000000 This man, Rizen FOWLER of Dekalb County, is a possible ancestor of the FOLWER families that crossed into and out of Warren County during the 19th century as the county lines were repeatedly redrawn. I have not researched him at this time (2005). THOMAS FOWLER OF DEKALB COUNTY, 1847-1848 (MEXICAN WAR) Thomas FOWLER, a resident of Dekalb County, was a private during the Mexican War, as noted at http://www.tngenweb.org/dekalb/chapter-14.htm Who his parents were, where and when he was born, and what became of him is not known to me at this time (2005).

#5: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1850s There are two families of FOWLER surname enumerated the 1850 census in Warren county. They are the families of Perry A. FOWLER and John G. FOWLER. The relationship between Perry A. and John G., if any, is unknown to me at this time (2005). Also the relationship, if any, between either or both of these men and William FOWLER and/or Benjamin FOWLER and/or Jacob B. FOWLER is unknown to me. A. 1850 Warren County FOWLER FAMILY #1: Perry A. FORLER b: ABT 1850 ,,TN (foster) Note on the KIRBY surname: This name appears in the Starr roll of Cherokee surnames. There are records of people with the KIRBY surname in Warren County as early as the 1836 Warren County tax list. Furthermore, there may be some connection, at least locational, if not familial, between the KIRBY family and the MASEY family who adopted the FOWLER boy, for in the Warren County Obituaries at http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/obit-ma.html#ma we learn that Rufus Lewis MASEY (1872-1943) of Bethany, who was born in Cannon Co., is buried in the KIRBY semetery. The meaning of this, if it has any meaning, is unknown to me at this time (2005). Note on Irena FOWLER: There is an ERROR here, possibly made by the census taker of 1850 or the census taker of 1860. Ten years from now, when Irena FOWLER, age 6 in 1850, should be 16 years old, she will suddenly be 10 years old (b: ABT 1850). Additionally, a new name, Amanda FOWLER, will appear out of nowhere with Irena's expected age -- namely, 16 years old (b: ABT 1844). I will deal with that problem below. Note on Mauric FOWLER. This is a transcriber's error. In later documents it is obvious that the name is Monroe, sometimes given as Berry Monroe. Next we have the 1850 census enumeration of the father of the FOWLER children who were living with the KIRBY family. He has no other family member in his residence and is the right age to have been the father of Susan Irena, Monroe ("Mauric"), Paralee M., and Sarah A. FOWLER. If his wife died, he may have taken them to the KIRBY home, especially if Mrs. KIRBY was a relative of his. 1 NAME 12 John /Fowler/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1823 2 PLAC ,,TN 1 REFN 0980-15 1 NOTE OCCU: Carpenter Redacted to Standard descendancy format: John FOWLER b: ABT 1823 , , TN Occupation: carpenter HIS PARENTAGE CONFIRMED! Evidence indicates that John G. Fowler found in Warren County TN. in the 1850 census Dist 12 living in household of Nathan Newby, or could be Kerby, hard to make out the spelling. Also in Warren County Dist. 16, are Irena Fowler age 6, Monroe Fowler age 5, Paralee M. Fowler age 3, and Sarah A. Fowler age 3/12, they are living in the household of William and Malinda Kerby. In 1860 Berry M. [Monroe?] and Paralee Malinda are living with John G. Fowler in DeKalb county. Does any one out there know this Fowler family or who the Kerby's were? by Betty Whitlock -- rlbcwhit@dtccom.net -- Saturday, 21 August 2004, at 10:39 p.m. William Kirby is my ancestor and he is married to his second wife, Malinda (Hammer) by the 1850 census. The Fowler children in the Kirby household are the children of Malinda's sister. John Fowler's wife, Dollie died and Malinda and William Kirby are raising the Fowler children. Betty http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?read=1257 by: Betty Whitlock - rlbcwhit@dtccom.net -- Wednesday, 6 April 2005, at 10:12 p.m. I am a descendant of William Kirby (Fowler children in his household). Malinda, William's wife, was a sister to Dollie Fowler. John and Dollie (Hammer) Fowler were parents of: Susan Irena (Fowler) Byars, Berry Monroe Fowler, Paralee Malinda (Fowler) Brown, Sarah Ann (Fowler) Garner. John Fowler remarried after Dollie's death; had a second family in Dekalb Co TN (can elaborate). Berry Monroe Fowler and wife Caroline (Braswell) had: Samantha Jane 1867, Amanda Etta 1868, Rufus O. 1869, Dolly A. 1871, Roxa 1874, Oscar R. 1877, Helen 1879, and Edna 1884. FOWLER and some of his younger children, plus the children of John G. FOWLER. Perry A. FOWLER seems to have lost his wife to death, his elder children William B. FOWLER, Mary J. E. FOWLER, Julia A. FOWLER, John F. FOWLER, James M. FOWLER, and Laura M. FOWLER seem to have died or left Warren County, and he seems to have fostered his remaining children and foster child to the BILES and WEST families -- while he himself was living with his relatives, the STILES / STYLES family. John G. FOWLER seems to have removed to DeKalb County with his daughter Paralee Malinda FOWLER, leaving his daughters Sarah and Susan Irena still fostered with their aunt Malinda (now also spelled Melinda) HANMMER in the KIRBY family household, while his son Mauric / Monroe FOWLER was moved from the KIRBY home to the WEST household, where he was joined by Frances P. LEA / LEAR / LANE / LEE, the former foster-child of the Perry A. If born in 1850, she would be 10 in 1860, not 15. Her relationship to the KIRBY family is through her deceased mother, Dollie HAMMER, who is the sister of Malinda (here called Melinda) HAMMER, wife of William KIRBY. MYSTERY / PROBLEM / ERROR -- IRENA Irena FOWLER is the same person as Irena FOWLER b: ABT 1844 ,,TN who was enumerated in the 1850 census as living in the William KIRBY and Malinda HAMMER household. Her relationship to the KIRBY family is through her deceased mother, Dollie HAMMER, who is the sister of Malinda (here called Melinda) Hammer, wife of William KIRBY. Probable explanation: The census taker of 1860 somehow switched the names and ages of Irena FOWLER (age 15 or 16) and Sarah FOWLER (age 10). But see also Amanda FOWLER, below, in the BILES family, for more confusion. In 1860 16 year old Amanda FOWLER was living in the BILES household and was not attending school. It is possible that at age 16 and not attending school she was a servant rather than a foster child. His relationship to the WEST family, if any, is not known to me at this time (2005). Frances LANE, 11 years old in 1860 (b: ABT 1849) is the same person as Frances P. Her relationship to the WEST family, if any, is not known to me at this time (2005). CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO FOWLER FAMILIES! In 1860 Monroe FOWLER, son of John G. FOWLER, was 16 years old, attending school, and lived, along with the former Perry A. FOWLER foster-child Frances LEA / LEAR / LEE / LANE, in the WEST household in McMinnville. This indicates that the two FOWLER families shared some connection, as when both families broke up, the foster child from the Perry A. FOWLER family and the natural child from the John G. FOWLER family ended up in the same family, that of the WESTs. page 181 P193-14 KELL - Post Office McMinnville, August 27, 1860 1410/1410 Thos. 69 M W Farmer 3000 900 Va Lydia 68 F W House Keeper Va Issabell 30 F W Tn Mary 27 F W Tn Nancy FOWLER 13 F W Tn S Thomas FOWLER 9 M W Tn S *FOWLER Nancy 13 F W Thomas 9 M W Note on KELL suname: This name appears in the Starr roll of Cherokee surnames. #7: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1870s It is in this decade, the 1870s, that we would expect to find the marriage of the Mr. FOWLER and Miss Unknown who have birth to the orphan child John Lee FOWLER. John Lee FOWLER was born 7 JUL 1881. Because of the near-continual redistricting of counties in middle Tennesse during the 19th century, a search for this marriage (if there actually was one) should be conducted in alll 'surrounding counties. Here is my data to date (2005) -- and pointers to further sources, or look-ups from readers of this page who access to further marriage records, would be greatly appreciated: Grundy County TN 1850 to 1874 marriages http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/grundy/vitals/grndytn.txt No FOWLER surnames (However, the marriage could have occurred after 1874 and before 1879.) I have not yet seen the 1870 Warren County Tennessee census, but a researcher named Joyce Hines Stone has, and she notes that Thomas FOWLER -- now more fully named Thomas Jefferson FOWLER and with an exact rather than estimated birth year -- was still a foster child in the KELL household at the age of 19 and that the KELL family had another foster child, Anna BOYD, whom he eventually married. She also notes the entry into Warren County in 1870 by a peripheral player in my research (but a central player in hers) named Jabez WILEY. ANNA BOYD AND THOMAS JEFFERSON FOWLER Both Thiomas Jefferson FOWLER and Anna BOYD were foster children in the KELL family in 1870, and latter married one another. There is anoher BOYD of interest to me, namely Opal Lee BOYD b: 16 JUL 1906 d: 23 APR 1988; daughter of John Henry Harrison BOYD, founder of the Warren Co. TN plant nursery industry. Opal Lee BOYD married Hiram Bertram STUBBLEFIELD b: 17 DEC 1910 d: 13 APR 1983. Opal Lee BOYD was decesnded from a GIBBS and before that from a RUSSELL (who had married a KEEL [KELL?]) and who in turn was descended from Mary Angeline MASEY b: 30 OCT 1836 d: 7 JUL 1877, thus linking the BOYD family to the MASEY family. How -- or if -- Anna BOYD was related to Opal Lee BOYD is unknown to me, but Warren County, TN is famous for its high degree of interconnectivity between families. #8: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1880s http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?read=1260 Posted By: B. Whitlock (rlbcwhit@dtccom.net) - Thursday, 7 April 2005 John G. Fowler's 2nd family consists of: Ethelinda 1853, James A. 1855, Martha A. 1857, Ruth E. 1859, Margaret 1861, Samuel 1865, Titus 1868, Louisa E. 1870, Anie B. 1876. They were born and lived in Dekalb Co TN, a considerable distance from the area of Warren Co TN where the Maseys lived. In 1880, James A. Fowler is married with a family in Smith Co TN, then some of his descendants went to TX. Samuel and Titus Fowler are ages 13 and 12 and in their parent's HH in 1880 Dekalb Co TN. Titus went to Indian Territory and then to TX. I have the above well documented. 1880 Warren Co TN, d.9 lists: Randle Mazy Jr. 32 TN; Margret Eller 28 TN wife; Thomas 1 TN son. As to Thomas Fowler and Ann (Boyd) you mention a daughter Drucilla (does she have another name?); I don't know anything about a Drucilla. 1880 Warren Co TN district 8 Thomas Fowler 29, Ann 27, Nancy 7, William 5, Lucy 2, Alton 5mo. Then in 1900 Red River Co TX: Thomas J. Fowler 49 TN married 28yrs, Ann 47, Alton P. 20, Mary 18, Walter G. 16, Fannie J. 14, Bernie M. 12, Lula S. 10, Earnest A. 5 TX. The census states that 10 of their 11 children are still alive. Thank you so much for your help, Betty! I also want to thank Nellie Wilson, who did an 1880 Warren Co. census look-up for me. Things are still unclear, but some of the former "maybes" have turned into definite "impossibles" and that is good. Thanks to your help, i know that 1) John G. Fowler's 2nd family is a now a definite "NO GO" due to his having no children born in 1881. 2) The 1880 district 9 census listing of Randle Mazy Jr. 32 TN; Margret Eller 28 TN wife; Thomas 1 TN son is H. L. Randolph MASEY, his wife Margaret Elvirie MACBRIDE and their son Thomas who was born in 1879. The census taker lists Thomas as a SON, not an orphan or foster child, and he is surnamed MASEY / MAZY, not FOWLER. That is odd. My husband's grandfather Leroy MASEY (son of the adopted John Lee FOWLER - MASEY) said that BOTH the boys in the family were orphans named FOWLER. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe he misremembered. Maybe he was lied to. Maybe his two daughters, to whom he told this, both heard him wrong. Maybe this was a "soap opera" sort of situation... John Lee FOWLER was born 7 JUL 1881 according to family records, or JULY 1882 according to the 1900 census.

#9: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1890s By this time the orphaned or abandoned John Lee FOWLER was living in the MASEY household. The 1890 census is lost and i have not yet researched other records of this decade. Betty "In 1900 Warren Co TN d.9, Jonny Masey is listed as age 18, orphan, born July 1882 in HH of Randolph and Margrett Masey. If these two children (John and Thomas) were orphaned brothers, how could Thomas already be in the Mazy/Masey HH age 1 in 1880, then John be born later in 1882?" That, indeed, is the $64 thousand dollar question! I have come to the conclusion now that only ONE child (John Lee) was adopted, and i am still unsure if his last name really was FOWLER, but that is the best the family has to offer. The 1890 census, now lost, would have helped us some, as we could have determined where Jonny (John Lee) FOWLER / MASEY was living at the age of 8. Incidentally, for what it's worth, John Lee FOWLER - MASEY was actually not born in 1882, as estimated through census reports, but on 7 JUL 1881, as documented in his son's personal memoir. I long ago read somewhere on the web -- before i started serious research and, alas, at a web site that seems to have totally disappeared -- that by the time of the 1910 census, at age 28, John Lee was still living with the MASEY family and was now listed as their "son". This was AFTER his marriage to Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN (in 1903), and AFTER the birth of their first three children (1904, 1906, 1909). I have noted elsewhere that John Lee seems to have been very attached to his foster / adoptive mother, named his first two daughters after her, and as soon as she died in 1913, he vacated Warren County with his wife and children, leaving his aged foster / adoptive father in the dust. Again, one senses some sort of family drama there. If the fate of Thomas MASEY, the natural son born in 1879, could be determined, or H. L. Randolph MASEY's will might be found, we might have further clues as to what was simmering beneath the surface. There is also the mystery of the "Black Dutch Cherokee" ethnicity that Leroy claimed from his father John Lee -- but getting to the bottom of that will have to wait until i locate John Lee's actual parents, i suppose. Again, thanks for everything. I have uploaded all of your contributions to my "Fowler Notes from Warren County" web page, linked below. I have also been uploading pictures, in the hope that someone will recognize family likenesses. Am i obsessed with this mystery? Yes, just a little! :-) Cordially, cat yronwode 1890 Migration The post from Joyce Hines Stone at http://www.migrations.org/individual.php3?record=9583 indicates that in 1890 Thomas Jefferson FOWLER, by then age 38, left Warren County, TN for Red River County, Texas with his wife (and former co-foster-child) Anna BOYD. The full text of Joyce Hines Stone's message can be found above, under the 1870s decade. Over in Dekalb County, we learn from the pages of the Liberty Herald newspaper for June 19, 1895, online at http://www.tngenweb.org/dekalb/herald71.htm that Civil War veteran C. C. FOWLER was building a new store and that someone named Jessie FOWLER owned land that was bordered by a piece of land that was for sale by the sheriff to settle a legal case. The Liberty Herald newspaper of February 24, 1897 at http://www.tngenweb.org/dekalb/herald122.htm also keeps us up to date on Dekalb County's C. C. FOWLER, as he was involved in the ongoing debate about the incorporation of the city of Cookeville.

#10: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1900s http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?read=1260 Posted By: B. Whitlock (rlbcwhit@dtccom.net) - Thursday, 7 April 2005 In 1900 Warren Co TN district 9, Jonny MASEY is listed as age 18, orphan, born July 1882 in Household of Randolph and Margrett MASEY. (John Lee's actual birth year was 1881, according to family records.) Note that, even though listed as an orphan, his surname is given as MASEY, not as FOWLER. This opens up the notion that the whole FOWLER story-line was a myth of some sort, and that the MASEY family actually adopted another MASEY child. Who that might be is another issue; elswhere i propose that he might be the bi-racial child of a former MASEY slave -- there was a "colored" MASEY family in McMinville in one census that suddenly was listed as "white" in the next census. In any case, John Lee FOWLER - MASEY and his wife Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN married 14 JUN 1903. Their children all bore the MASEY surname. They continued to live in McMinnville. Their children born this decade: Octa Elvira MASEY b: 1 JUL 1904. d: 26 DEC 1984. Picture of Octa Elvira MASEY age 10 Charles Leroy / Leroy Charles / Roy / Lee C. TN d: 5 OCT 1996, Pipestone, MN Picture of Elsie MASEY age about 20 It seems clear that John Lee FOWLER - MASEY was fond of his foster / adoptive mother, Margaret Elvirie McBRIDE, for he named two of his daughters after portions of her name: Octa Elvira MASEY b: 1 JUL 1904 and Elsie Marguerite MASEY b: 14 MAR 1909. #11: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The 1910s The foster / adoptive mother of John Lee FOWLER - MASEY, Margaeret Elvirie McBRIDE, died 23 OCT 1913 at the age of 59 (about a week short of her 60th birthday). Almost immediaely John FOWLER - MASEY and his wife Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN left Warren County, TN with their children, even though John's foster / adoptive father H. L. Randolph MASEY was still living and would survive another three years, until 13 AUG 1916, when he died at the age of 70. The children of John Lee FOWLER - MASEY and his wife Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN born this decade: Willie V. MASEY b: 7 JUN 1911, McMinnville, Warren Co. In 1917 they moved back east to the small mining town of Lutie, Latimer County, Oklahoma. (These migration dates come from Lee MASEY's personal memoirs listing all the schools hehad attended.) Elsewhere in Tennessee -- in Del Rio, Cocke County, Eastern TN -- a man by the name of Charlie LeRoy Fowler joined the army and fought in World War One. This name is interesting, because John FOWLER - MASEY named his oldest son Charles LeRoy MASEY. Did he name his child after his own father, brother, or uncle? #12: FOWLERS IN WARREN COUNTY, TN BY DECADE: The Rest of the 20th Century Betty Whitlock (rlbcwhit@dtccom.net) found John Lee FOWLER - MASEY in Oklahoma in 1920. I have listed the enumeration as given, alongside the actual names as spelled in the family: 1920 Federal Census Latimer Co, Cravens OK: John L. Masey 37 TN farmer John Lee FOWLER - MASEY Dilla A. 34 KS Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN Charles L. 13 TN Charles Leroy / Leroy C. / Lee MASEY Elsie M. 10 TN Elsie Marguerite MASEY William B. 8 TN Willie V. (female, not William!) MASEY James L. 5 TN James Lee / Jim Lee MASEY Rutha M. 2 AZ Ruby M. MASEY This accords with Leroy's memory of having attended school in Phoenix, AZ (where Ruby was born in December 1917) and then going to school in Lutie, Latimer County, Oklahoma. John Lee FOWLER - MASEY died in Oklahoma and was buried there. The Latimer County Obituary record site maintained by Hoyt Duncan (hduncan@eosc.edu) at http://www.rootsweb.com/~oklatime/obitM.htm gives us this information -- two listings under two spellings for the swme person, one with incorrect year of death, the other with an incorrect day of death; one with no spouse, the other with no cemetery location: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name Birth date Death date Spouse Burial cmt/loc Masey, John L. July 07, 1881 September 18, 1921 [blank] Cemetery - Section C, Row 28 Massey, J. L. July 07, 1881 September 17, 1921 Villa A. McLaughlin [Blank] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The confusion in dates and name spelling is also found in the obituary very kindly sent to me by Hoyt Duncan (hduncan@eosc.edu): Source: The Latimer County News Democrat - September 23, 1921 J. L. Massey, born July 7th, 1881 and residing south of Lutie, died at his home of typhoid fever Sunday afternoon. He leaves a wife and six children. On June 14th, 1903, he was married to Villa A. McLaughlin. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by Rev. Thomas Lucas and interment was made at the Lutie cemetery. The census records above indicate five children, not six. A check of the 1921 calendar confirms that Sunday was the 18th of September, so the corrected Latimer County Obituary record web page, combining both MASEY / MASSEY entries and correcting their respective dating errors, should read: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name Birth date Death date Spouse Burial cmt/loc Masey, John L. July 07, 1881 September 18, 1921 Villa A. McLaughlin Cemetery - Section C, Row 28 Massey, J.L. -- see Masey, John L. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shortly after the 1921 school year started, Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN MASEY was back in Los Angeles, CA. with her five children, for according to Leroy's school record memoir, he then attended Wilson Junior High in Los Angeles, followed by two years of high school, after which he dropped out and got a job. In 1929 Villa Adell MCLAUGHLIN MASEY remarried in Ventura County, CA to Earl Phillip LINDER. This is documented elsewhere (on my hard drive; not uploaded to the web yet). Villa had no children with Mr. LINDER. There are no FOWLERs listed in the 20th century Warren Co. Obituariies online at http://www.tngenweb.org/warren/obit-f.htm

#13: SPECULATION IF FATHER WAS A FOWLER Who do i think the father of the FOWLER - MASEY orphan boy is? Of course he could have been a stranger newly arrived in Warren County. He could also have been one of the local FOWLER men, whom i am listing here in birth order, regardless of parentage, with comments on the likelihood of their being the mystery father. William B. FOWLER b: ABT 1834 ,,TN (not in Warren county in 1860) child of Perry A. Fowler and Rebecca Carter Unlikely -- too old, not in Warren county in 1860 or thereafter John F. FOWLER b: ABT 1841 ,,TN (not in Warren county in 1860) child of Perry A. Fowler and Rebecca Carter Unlikely -- not in Warren county in 1860 or thereafter James M. FOWLER b: ABT 1843 ,,TN (not in Warren county in 1860) child of Perry A. Fowler and Rebecca Carter Unlikely -- not in Warren county in 1860 or thereafter Berry Monroe FOWLER b: ABT 1845 ,,TN child of John G. Fowler and Dollie Hammer (1850: foster child in KIRBY family, Warren Co, TN; 1860: foster child in WEST family, Warren Co, TN) + Caroline BRASWELL moved to Bryan Co., KY by 1920 3 Samantha Jane FOWLER b: 1867 3 Amanda Etta FOWLER b: 1868 3 Rufus O. FOWLER b: 1869 3 Dolly A. FOWLER b: 1871 3 Roxa FOWLER b: 1874 3 Oscar R. FOWLER b: 1877 3 Helen FOWLER b: 1879 3 Edna FOWLER b: 1884 It would seen that Berry Marion FOWLER's marriage to Caroline BRASWELL and his fathering of two daughters in 1879 and 1884 with her would precude his being the father of the FOWLER orphan boy later adopted by the MASEY family -- unless John Lee FOWLER b: 7 JUL 1881 was a secret, illegitimate child, fathered by Berry Monroe at the age of 36. Thomas Jefferson FOWLER b: 1852 ,,TN child of Perry A. Fowler and Rebecca Carter (1860 and 1870: foster child in KELL family, Warren Co.) Possible but not too likely: If he fathered John he did so at age 29 (1881), as an illegitimate child, then abandoned him as he and his wife Anna BOYD left Warren County for Texas in 1890, at age 38, taking his and Anna's children and abandoning a 9 year old son, John, to be fostered by H. L. Randolph MASEY and Margaret Ellen / Margaret Elvirie MCBRIDE -- who told the boy he was an orphan. Pretty melodramatic. Almost unbelievable. But technically not impossible. IF MOTHER WAS A FOWLER It may be a coincidence, but the middle name LEE is found throughout the adopted FOWLER - MASEY line: The adopted John LEE FOWLER - MASEY, his sons Charles LEROY "LEE" Masey and James LEE "Jim" MASEY, and his granddaughter Laura LEE "Lori" MASEY. Is it possible that the mother of the FOWLER boys who were adopted by the MASEY family was surnamed LEE? Frances LEA is probably too old to have been impregnated by one of the FOWLER boys with whom she cohabited. Frances P. LEA b: ABT 1848-1849 ,,TN parents unknown, possibly related to Samuel Lea enumerated in Warren Co. census in 1830 or so. Married a man named WEATHERFORD. It is also possible that the mother was an unmaried female FOWLER who did not divulge the surname of her male partner. The boy known as "Jonny MASEY, orphan," in 1900, may have been the illegitemate offsping of a FOWLER girl or woman and a MASEY man -- or a man of unknown surname. John G. FOWLER's 1st family (with Dollie HAMMER) produced two "eligible" daughters, whose marital status in 1881 is unknown to me and who may have had an illegitimate child in 1881. They can probably be discounted based on their ages, though, if they married at the usual age, in their 20s: Paralee Malinda FOWLER b: ABT 1847 ,,TN (age 34 in 1881) + Unknown BROWN marriage date not known, death date unknown Sarah Ann FOWLER b: ABT 1850 ,,TN (age 30 in 1881) + Unknown GARNER marriage date not known, death date unknown John G. FOWLER's 2nd family (with Parallee JOHNSON? -- or unknown) produced four far more likely "eligible" daughters, whose marital status in 1881 is unknown to me, any one of whom may have had an illegitimate child in 1881: Ethelinda b: 1853 (age 27 in 1881) Martha A. b: 1857 (age 24 in 1881) Ruth E. b: 1859 (age 22 in 1881) Margaret b: 1861 (age 20 in 1881) One of Berry Monroe FOWLER's daughters (a grand-daughter of John G. FOWLER) was barely of an age that she might remotely have had an illegitimate child in 1881: Samantha Jane FOWLER b: 1867 (age 14 in 1881) Perry A. FOWLER also had two "eligible" daughters, less likely, as they were older, and one was married at some point: Nancy L. FOWLER b: ABT 1848 ,,TN (age 32 in 1881) 1860: foster child in KELL family, Warren Co.) not known if ever married, death date unknown Mahala Catherine FOWLER b: ABT 1850 ,,TN (age 30 in 1881) 1860: not in Warren Co.; possibly fostered in DeKalb Co.) + William J. EDGE married in DeKalb Co. marriage date not known, death date unknown If i were writing fiction and trying to create a coherent narrative from these census records, rather than taking them for what they really are, i would say that 20 year old Margaret FOWLER was a logical candidate to be the mother of an illegitimate child -- a boy who was adopted by a woman named Margaret Eller / Elvira MASEY and renamed Jonny MASEY when her own son Thomas died -- a boy who iun turn who named one of his own daughters Elsie Marguerite. But that's the fiction process -- creating a good story -- and not the task of genealogy -- making an accurate record of events. END OF WARREN COUNTY FOWLER FILE
